In most jurisdictions, adding someone to title is relatively straightforward. But it all depends on the willingness of the current owner, or Grantor, to sign a deed adding that person (or those persons) to title.
Common reasons to add someone to title include:
- Marriage
- An intention to share ownership costs or to apply for a loan
- Additional security (adding an owner means one owner cannot unilaterally sell or mortgage the property)
- To keep property “in the family”
Do keep in mind that if someone is added to title, all owners must sign subsequent deeds adding or removing individuals from title.
